February 27, 2004, Suffok, MA Alfred Gray Beswick, age 78, husband of Margie Butler Beswick, departed this life Feb. 27, 2004, after a long struggle with recurrent colon cancer. Al was the son of the late Frank J. and Hazel G. Beswick and was born in Framingham, MA. He lived hs youth in the neighboring town of Natick. He served three years in the U.S. Naval Aviation Reserve as a flight crewman during World War II. He graduated from Northeastern University in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Sigma. He was employed as a field engineer for the Western Electric Co. under contract to the U.S. Navy Sixth Fleet for several years before transferring to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, where he served as a researcher and project engineer on several space missions. Al holds several patents and many awards. He was project manager on the Lunar Penetrometer Research Program. Al was an esteemed member of the Saco River Boys canoeing fraternity. He is survived by his guardian angel wife of 50 years, Margie Butler Beswick of Suffolk; a son and daughter-in-law, Michael Allen and Sherry Pearce Beswick; two grandsons, Kyle and Cory Beswick, all of Canaan Valley, WV; a sister and brother-in-law, Barbara Beswick and Robert Daniel Sullivan of Hopkinton, MA; a brother and sister-in-law, Paul Robert and S.K. Beswick of Newington, NH; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Al fought a valiant battle with colon cancer for the past eight years. In June 2003, his attending physicians declared there was nothing further they could do to help his advancing disease. It was predicted that he'd be gone in 4 to 6 weeks. His will to live and fight it to the end is reflected in the 8 months that superseded the predicted 8 weeks. He made it through his 79th birthday at the end of October, and then Thanksgiving and Christmas, and most amazing of all to his 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 30. For a time, we thought that some of the new drug therapies for advanced colon cancer on the verge of FDA approval might extend his life force even more. Alas, it was not to be. By the time Erbitux (and now Avastin) were approved, his condition was so severely depleted that any effort to treat him would result in disaster. If he had only a few more months of sustenance, possibly these miracle therapies would have helped. (Also, there are several more in the FDA pipeline, some of which might have played a role.) It was not to be. |
